3D2N Wae Rebo - Ruteng Trip Highlight

The traditional village of Wae Rebo in the district of Manggarai on the island of Flores,
East Nusa Tenggara, has received the Top Award of Excellence from UNESCO in the 2012 UNESCO Asia Pacific Heritage Awards.

This small and isolated village was recognized for its rebuilding of the traditional Mbaru Niang traditional house based on the spirit of community cooperation towards a sustainable tradition, Situated on around 1.100 meters above sea level. Wae Rebo is completely surrounded by panoramic mountains and the dense Todo forest.

GENERAL INFORMATION

  • Wae Rebo is a remote traditional village located 1,200 meters above sea level. You’ll need to hike about 2.5–3 hours from Denge or Dintor village to reach it.
  • You need to trek on foot to reach the village.
  • Both Ruteng and Wae Rebo are in the mountainous region of Flores, with cool temperatures, especially at night.
  • Temperatures usually can be 22–26 °C by day, 14–18 °C by night

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES

  • In Wae Rebo, you’ll sleep in a traditional Mbaru Niang house (shared dorm-style floor with sleeping mats and blankets).
  • No private rooms or bathrooms. Basic toilets and bathing areas are available. Electricity is limited
  • In Ruteng, you will stay in a guest house with facilities, Casa Miya

CULTURAL ETIQUETTE

  • Wae Rebo is a sacred and preserved village, please dress modestly and respect local customs.
  • Photography is allowed, but be respectful and always ask before taking close-ups of people.
  • Guests usually join a welcome ceremony (Wae Lu’u) upon arrival to honor local tradition.

  • No phone signal or internet in Wae Rebo.
  • Ruteng has mobile reception and wi-fi in guest house

FOOD IN WAE REBO VILLAGE

  • Meals are simple and home-cooked, often rice, vegetables, eggs, or local chicken. Vegetarian options may be available, but best to inform in advance.
